James How (a former violin student and later a graduate engineer) began making strings for his own instruments early on. In 1958, he founded the company Rotosound, which quickly gained worldwide recognition for its production of high-quality strings. The first Rotosound artists included music greats such as the Shadows, Beatles, Rolling Stones, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Rotosound also manufactured strings for the rare Vox Organ guitar and the Burns Guitar Company. A key driving force behind this development was John Entwistle (The Who), who was involved in the development of the SWING BASS roundwound string. Word of its success quickly spread, and the "British Invasion" magically attracted other artists and bands such as Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, and Queen.
